looking for leather artist

Hi... I want to have a special gift made for a friend, and am wondering if anyone out there knows of an artist who works in leather... thinking specifically of having a custom bracelet made -- and no, not the BDSM or goth kinds. He's pretty conservative and that's not the meaning I'm going for behind the gift. Any advice/suggestions are appreciated! Thanks.

share artistic studio space with me and some keen folks!

I am with a group of 3 others that are looking for one more artist to share affordable studio space to create wondrous artistic creations. We also intend to be a supportive community that helps each other to realize our artistic dreams.

I am a painter, Melly makes burlesque related costume, Jessica is a photographer, and Kiva makes jewelry and other items out of reclaimed materials. I personally would love to have another painter involved.

We plan to host monthly events such as art shows, performances, screenings, or installations. We also plan to offer workshops to the public, so if you have some wisdom to offer, this may be a venue for you to get some exposure and earn some extra income.

We have found a storefront location next to a darkroom cooperative and across from the Heaventree Gallery on Kingsway.

Our space is limited so we can only take on one more artist at the time, and my preference is for a painter or multimedia artist, but... if you know a bunch of people who want to create another studio, there are three other spaces for lease in the area -- mostly around $1500 a month for 1500 square feet. I could get you the contact information for the landlords and we could turn this area of Kingsway into an artistic hub -- which would rock. It is not too far from Main and 16th, but closer to Fraser.

We are planning on moving in in September.

Please forward this information to your friends who are looking to bring their artistic expression to the forefront of their lives. Get in touch with me if you would like to know more.
Craft Fair Pricing Help

Hi - I have decided to venture out on a limb and start my own summer craft fair for 2007 in Vancouver to fill the void of urban and modern fairs. I have 8ft tables available and people can either have a full table or share with 4ft each. I want to take a poll and see what people consider to be a reasonable price. The fair will be over two days (Sat/Sun) sometime in May. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

OT: The future of arts and culture in BC needs your help! FORWARD AS YOU SEE FIT

The future of arts and culture in BC needs your help!

The Provincial Government's Standing Committee on Finance recently
recommended in its budget report to Treasury Board that the
government: "increase funding to the BC Arts Council to enhance arts
and culture in the province."

This is great news! But for this recommendation to have effect, the
Ministry for Tourism Sport and the Arts needs to follow up with a
request to Treasury Board for an increase to their budget.

And you can help make this happen.

Here's what you can do:

1) Email the Honourable Stan Hagen, Minister for Tourism, Sport and
the Arts (stan.hagen.mla@leg.bc.ca) saying you endorse the Standing
Committee's recommendation. Specifically, tell him you support the
following key recommendation:

"To ensure an adequate investment in sustainable communities
throughout British Columbia, Arts Future BC is recommending all-party
support for an increased investment of $32 million in Arts and
Culture through the British Columbia Arts Council, in the 2007-2009
budgets."

2) Send a copy of your email to:

The Honourable Carol Taylor, Minister of Finance
(carol.taylor@leg.bc.ca)

and to the members of Treasury Board:
Honourable Rick Thorpe, Vice Chair rick.thorpe.mla@leg.bc.ca
Honourable Pat Bell pat.bell.mla@leg.bc.ca
Honourable Bill Bennett bill.bennett.mla@leg.bc.ca
Honourable Shirley Bond shirley.bond.mla@leg.bc.ca
Honourable Ida Chong ida.chong.mla@leg.bc.ca
Honourable Rich Coleman rich.coleman.mla@leg.bc.ca
Honourable Kevin Falcon kevin.falcon.mla@leg.bc.ca
Honourable Colin Hansen colin.hansen.mla@leg.bc.ca
Honourable Linda Reid linda.reid.mla@leg.bc.ca
John Yap, MLA john.yap.mla@leg.bc.ca
Iain Black, MLA iain.black.mla@leg.bc.ca

3) Send a copy to your own MLA. You can find your MLA's email address
at www.leg.bc.ca/mla/3-1-1.htm

4) Send a copy to the Alliance for Arts and Culture
(hredfern@allianceforarts.com) so we can keep track of the numbers of
letters going to the minister.

These correspondences need to go out by December 10, 2006.

You can find a sample letter you can use, or adapt, here: (see end of this mail - )
www.allianceforarts.com/advoca...gen.pdf

Or you can write your own. Just be sure to say you endorse the
Standing Committee's recommendation and support an increased
investment of $32 million to the BC Arts Council in the 2007 to 2009 budgets to support arts and culture in BC.

Background

Throughout the fall, the Alliance for Arts and Culture through Arts
Future BC has been coordinating submissions to the Standing Committee
on Finance and Government Services. This is the committee that makes
recommendations to Treasury Board for the upcoming provincial budget.
The Committee toured the province this fall getting community input.
Arts Future BC coordinated oral presentations to the Committee in
eight regional centres and presented the Committee with a detailed
written brief . All of these presentations focused on the
recommendation to increase BC's investment in arts and culture with a
$32 million increase to BC Arts Council's budget.

Who is Arts Future BC?

Arts Future BC is a coalition of eight BC arts and culture service
organizations and citizens groups. The Alliance is one of the
founding members. Between us we represent over 900 arts
organizations and thousands of individual artists and arts supporters
throughout the province.

Why Now?

A delegation from Arts Future BC will be asking for the Honourable
Stan Hagen, Minister for Tourism, Sport and the Arts for his support
for the Standing Committee on Finance's recommendation to increase
support for arts and culture through BC Arts Council. Your letters
will add strength to our arguments and show the Minister that he has
a broad base of support for this initiative.

Why BC Arts Council?

Arts Future BC believes that BC Arts Council is THE vehicle to
deliver this much needed investment: it puts funding into the hands
of individual artists and arts organizations directly engaged in arts
and culture creation, production and dissemination, and community
development through the arts, working throughout the province. BC
Arts Council is also the best agency to deliver core funding to build
sustainable arts organizations, to support BC artists, and to ensure
that BC communities benefit from a stable arts sector that
contributes to the social and economic health of the community.

Why $32 million?

Arts Future BC has researched Provincial Government's current
investment in arts and culture, set reasonable funding targets and
costed out what it would take to reach these targets. $32 million
will move us from one of the lowest of Canada's provinces in
contributions to arts and culture to one of the highest. This is not
unreasonable considering BC has one of the most vibrant arts and
culture sectors in the country. This increase will also provide much
needed longer term stability for BC's arts and culture community.

THANK YOU!

Sample Letter

The Honourable Stan Hagen, MLA
Ministry of Tourism Sport and the Arts
Room 028, Parliament Buildings Victoria, BC V8V 1X4
stan.hagen.mla@leg.bc.ca
Dear Minister Hagen
I am writing on behalf of NAME OF ORGANIZATION, which operates in MUNICIPALITY, in REGION of BC and as a citizen who strongly believes in the importance of arts and culture to our province and supports government investment in the arts.
I want to register my strong support for the following recommendation made by the Standing Committee on Finance and Government Services in its November 16, 2006 Report on the 2007 Budget Consultations: that the government, "increase funding to the BC Arts Council to enhance arts and culture in the province."
I also support the key recommendation made by Arts Future BC in oral submissions before the Committee in eight BC centres and its written brief to the Committee. Arts Future BC is a coalition representing over 900 BC arts organizations and thousands of individual artists and arts supporters. To ensure an adequate investment in sustainable communities throughout British Columbia, Arts Future BC is recommending all-party support for an increased investment of $32 million in Arts and Culture through the British Columbia Arts Council, in the 2007–2009 budgets.
In making its recommendation to Treasury Board, the Committee stated that it "… believes that the combined efforts of the arts community in British Columbia present a compelling argument for a significant increase to the core funding provided to the B.C. Arts Council to support arts and culture in B.C."
A strong arts and culture sector benefits all of BC’s communities and its citizens. The arts generate social and economic health in our province far beyond the current government investment. I urge you, as minister responsible for the arts, to support the Committee’s recommendation by including an increase of $32 million to British Columbia Arts Council in your 2007 to 2009 service plan and in your ministry's budget requests to Treasury Board for the same period.
The support of the Ministry for Tourism, Sport and the Arts to the recommended increase will be your ministry’s arts and cultural legacy to the 2010 Olympic Games and beyond. A sustainable arts and culture sector will also make a significant contribution towards achieving the government’s five strategic goals.
In the words of Premier Gordon Campbell, "Arts and Culture play a critical role in defining and enriching our communities, our unique BC identity, and the lives of us all wherever we live. The arts are also important contributor to our economy as well as to our society."
Yours truly,

Love in All its Forms: Group Show for February

I am hoping to create a group show for February, with the tentative theme of "Love in all its Forms"

I want to showcase talents from many different disciplines and was imagining having paintings, mixed media, and photography on the wall...

but also having an opening and closing night with spoken word, music, performers of various natures, and possibly some video-poems or the like. The first night would set the tone of excitement for the rest of the month and the closing night would be a grand hurrah to say goodbye to the pieces and a last chance for folks to buy art.

The visual artists would likely be keen on just having their art on the wall, but maybe there could there be a hat passed or a cover to help show our appreciation for the talents and time of peformers on the opening and closing night.

If anyone interested in participating or helping create such an event, get a hold of me.
I am eyeing Rhizome as a location, but am open to suggestions.

Hi all...

Is anyone interested in moderating this tribe?

I moved to the Kootenays over a year ago, and I really don't feel enough in the loop in Vancouver-related craft stuff to adequately moderate this tribe anymore. It would be better to have someone who can keep up with things better.

Let me know, and it's yours! :)
I'm just trying photo-emulsion silk screening for the first time.
I know that the emulsion is UV-sensitive, soI have 2 questions:

1) Can I work under regular room lighting to prep my screen? or does it have to be done in the dark or with a darkroom light?
2) What kind of UV light is both most effective and the cheapest for a casual/beginner silkscreener like me?

Sewing Lesson in Vancouver

Does anyone know where I can get sewing lessons in Vancouver, preferrably close to Kitsilano area? I know nothing about sewing and I need to start making my own dance costumes. I tried to pay someone to make it for me but she didn't finish the project, but still kept my $200 cheque, saying it was "too much work" (different from what she told me before she began the project). I have great ideas but I don't know how to make them, and right now I am stuck with several unfinished costumes.

I am quite tight on budget so a group lesson will be the most ideal for me. I checked community centres (Roundhouse, West End) but none offer sewing.

Anyone?

Victorian/Gothic Jewelry, Hats, Handbags

Hi all!
Just a short introduction - I'm a life-long Vancouver resident (yup, I was born here!) who among other artsy things, creates costume-oriented elaborate jewelry, hats and handbags with a kind of dark theatrical Victorian appeal. Such as: Lace chokers dripping with crystal beads, silver filigree cameo brooches, glass bead pocket watch chains, chandelier earrings, top hats and mini top hats decorated with feathers/flowers/lace, and silver-embellished wood cigar box handbags.

More about me and the decadent things I make is available here: http://www.artofadornment.ca

craft shows!?

Holy cow, there are listings of literally dozens of craft shows in all the local community papers -- including the Mother of All craft shows, "Circle Craft"! http://www.circlecraft.net/page278.htm

If you haven't been to Circle Craft, you simply must go. There are an incredible number of amazing artists there -- not simply casual hobbyists, but *serious* talented artisans who devote their lives to making beautiful things.

Anyone recommend any other craft shows? I'm looking for hip, innovative, unusual stuff.

Any more details on the show you're organizing, Shimmy?

new quilting template on the market

Hello all -

My wife and I have a new small business; I invented a template that helps the quilter cut hexagons, trapezoids, triangles and diamonds significantly faster than typical common methods. It's infinitely scalable from 1/2 to 8" for each shape. If you're interested please take a look at our site - www.cutquiltsfast.com. Animations to demonstrate its use are on the "how to use" page in the lefthand toolbar. Thanks for your time, and thanks to Amazonika for letting us post here!

Thought it might be a good idea if any of us hear of any up and coming good craft shows to post it. For those of us who may want to participate, the earlier the better for the posting. It would also be a great way to see some of each other's craft/art. The first one I can think of at the moment would probably be Stone Soup Festival at Brittania School (Commerical Dr.), sometime in early May. Contact phone number 605-215-4112. Probably a little early yet but there ya go. Peace, Jackie.

new bead store on The Drive!

I can't remember how many times I've said to myself "There should be a bead store on Commercial Drive" -- I mean, the 'hood is a mecca of creative bead-wearin' types who like to make their own crafts. It only makes sense!

Well now there is one!
It's called Beadmania. 1011 Commercial -- right between Spank and The Pic antiques. Upstairs.

The selection is great, the prices are good (About the same as other places in town) and the store layout is really nice, with beads displayed in little dishes in shelves.

They offer classes too.
If you want anything in bulk, you can get 30% off if you order $50 or more (orders take 2-3 days).

...now someone needs to open a yarn store and sewing/fabric store on the Drive, and my world will be perfect. ;)

I never did get around to doing mosaics, but it's still on my long list.

I do have a successful bead jewelry story to report to you though. I made about 50 pairs of bead earrings a while back, and sold them for a huge profit mostly to people at my work. I made about $230 profit, and am donating all the money to the BC Cancer Agency for a big fundraising walk I'm doing this weekend.

After this though, I am going to start making them to keep the profit. It was my first money-making crafty project, and it's very exciting to see it pay off, literally. :)

It's time to start planning already!
This year I want to decorate my porch all 'ween stylee, with cobwebs and creepy creatures and scary stuff. I want to be "that house" with the coolest decorations and best candy!

But more importantly, I haven't decided on a costume yet. Need ideas! I need at least two costumes, maybe three (I hate wearing the same thing to various parties).

Are you guys doing any cool Hallowe'en-ish creative stuff?
Serger?

Hi there...

I am getting back into sewing lately, full of inspiration and ideas, but a lot of it would be a lot easier with access to a serger in addition to my trusty old single needle machine.

I'm wondering whether anyone in East Van has a serger they wouldn't mind letting me use on occasion? Or even a serger they want to sell?

Thanks :)

let's mosaic!

Okay, I really want to get serious about making mosaics!
I've never done it before, but I have a bunch of tiles and coloured glass (I'm willing to share), and I really want to just dive in and finally do it.

Anyone want to join me? I was thinking we could share the cost of supplies too.
We'll also need a place to do it (my place is too small).

I will be away the April 24/25th weekend, but maybe we can aim for the weekend after that.

We can get some books and learn together, unless an experienced mosaicker will volunteer to help us...hint-hint! ;)

Who's interested?

A friend recently gifted me with an old Singer 600e (circa 1964) and I love it. It works fine but it definitely needs to be maintenanced/cleaned and oiled.

Does anyone know of any places in Vancouver to have this done?

Thanks in advance :)

The only one I know of is in Coquitlam, and I generally don't go out that way. I've decided to devote a full day just to checking out different stores, but need a list!

Also, I'm looking to purchase metal, not plastic, knitting needles, as my tabby cat has decided needles = chew toy.

new name for this tribe?

I admit, I wanted to think of something more clever for this tribe to be named.

I wanted to mention Vancouver, so that anyone doing a tribe search for Vancouver could find it, and I didn't want to limit the tribe name to "crafts" or "art" alone because I want to encompass all kinds of handiwork and crafty self-expression. I also wanted something that would appeal equally to both genders.

So what do you guys think...do we need a better name? Do we care? Can you think of anything better?

Does anyone do any leather work?
I'd love to try -- I'm not sure if I want to invest in all the special tools, but I'd love to try making something simple, like a belt, a bracelet, a choker, or other simple accessories.

Any ideas how to try it out without buying a whole bunch of expensive specialized tools?
